AYC Member Daryl Kirton will deliver a presentation on the collision involving the Norwegian frigate HNoMS Helge Ingstad. The incident occurred while she was operating with a NATO Standing Force and collided with the Maltese-flagged tanker Sola TS in Norwegian waters just outside the Sture Terminal. The frigate sustained significant damage and was ultimately grounded deliberately to prevent her from sinking.
Daryl, still serving in the Royal Navy, writes, "During my time at the Royal Navys Survivability School, we conducted an in-depth study of this event and had the opportunity to discuss it directly with members of the Norwegian crew. The case offers numerous lessons identified, particularly regarding ship survivability and the application of COLREGS." The talk will offer food for thought for all of us who venture to sea.
The talk will commence at 7pm and will be followed by a Q and A session. A light supper of Lasagne (Meat or Vegetable) with Green Salad and Garlic Bread will be available after the talk for £6.50 per head and the bar will be open from 5pm as usual.
