Frequently Asked Questions

AXE YACHT CLUB (AYC)

What are the current membership and boat fees?

This year's fees are listed on the 'Join AYC' page.

Can I join AYC as a social member?

No, AYC does not have a social membership. The Club invites new active members to join within the following categories:

  • Active boat owners
  • Ex-AYC members who have retired from active boating.
  • Those who were previously members of RYA affiliated clubs and have "retired" to the area.
  • Those who "crew" (in its broadest sense) for current AYC members, who then act as their sponsors.
  • Those who join the Dinghy Sailing programme.
  • Those who apply to join so that they can go on the mooring waiting list.
  • Exceptionally after agreement by the EC.

I am not a member of AYC. Can I pay to launch my boat via the slipway?

No. The slipway is not generally available to non-members.

Does AYC offer marina services?

Axe Yacht Club is a members' run club and definitely NOT a marina. A particular feature of the Club is that it is maintained and operated by volunteers from across the membership. This self-help ethos is the essence of AYC and has enabled the Club to keep the cost of being a member low compared with other harbours.

What is the Bosun's role?

The Bosun is contracted to provide general marine services for the Club. He is responsible for supervision of boat parking in the yard, operation of the boat hoist and other plant machinery, as well as maintenance dredging. He is available most weekday mornings.

What boating activities do AYC members enjoy?

The Club currently has around 900 members who enjoy a very wide range of water-based activities; cruising, dinghy sailing, day boating, angling, power-boating, scuba diving, water ski-ing, and windsurfing.

Where do I find advice on navigating the harbour entrance?

All harbour users are strongly advised to read the Axmouth Harbour Pilotage notes. This general advice for harbour users is given for guidance only and the Club accepts no responsibility. Members & visitors using the Club and boating in and out of the River Axe do so entirely at their own risk and must carry third party insurance liability cover of £3,000,000 minimum.

How do I use the slipway safely?

The slipway can get busy at times and launch & retrieval can be dangerous. For everyone's safety and enjoyment, please read the Safety Guidance before using the slipway.

What training courses are available at AYC?

AYC is a Training Centre recognised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) to provide a range of shore based and on the water courses. For details of the courses offered see 'Training'.

Are member's allowed to bring guests into the clubhouse?

Members may introduce up to three guests in any one day. The same guest may not be introduced more than three times in any calendar year. Members must sign-in their guests in the Visitor's book in the clubhouse entrance hallway. If they have a car you must purchase a visitor's parking permit for them (£5 per day) - available in the clubhouse entrance.
