Red Arrows flypast honours Group Captain Brian Lavender

Published 09:50 on 2 Jun 2025

On Saturday 31st May, the Red Arrows made a detour from their planned transit route between Brize Norton and Exeter to perform a flypast over Axe Yacht Club in memory of Group Captain Brian (Danny) Lavender OBE AFC RAF (Retd).

A late convert to sailing following a long, interesting and distinguished career in the RAF, Brian served as AYC Secretary for ten years and then Club President from 2011 to 2015. He passed away on 27th May 2025 shortly after his 90th birthday.

Known as Danny whilst in the RAF, he flew the Hunter, Swift, Sabre and Phantom. On Saturday ten Red Arrows performed the flypast, with an additional smoke salute. As many will know, only nine planes perform the Red Arrows displays but there is always a spare plane. Whilst serving at Central Flying School, Brian volunteered to pilot the spare on a number of occasions. The flypast was a very fitting tribute to a distinguished Club member.
