Axe Yacht Club's Open Day

21st May 2022, 09:30 - 16:00

Axe Yacht Club's Open Day

The Clubhouse will be open from 09:30 with members on hand to show you around and talk to you about sailing & motor boating at AYC and membership of the Club. Come and see Nobby the Dredger, talk to our Training Team about the RYA qualifications on offer, or just chat with members about the Club. The Social Team will be offering tea, coffee and snacks to keep you refreshed.

AYC supports the RNLI and they will be joining us for the day offering information about their role and water safety advice. They will also be happy to check your life jacket is safe to use for the coming season.

No need to book unless you would like to try dinghy sailing (see below):

Dinghy Taster Sails

Axe Yacht Club offers the opportunity to try sailing either before you join or as a new member. Taster sails are organised by the Cadet and Family Sailing Group in the Club dinghies. The boat will be helmed (driven) by an experienced helm. The boat used may vary depending on the conditions but will usually be the Argo, which is a large, stable boat that can comfortably accommodate 4 crew.

Each taster sail lasts 45 minutes. The Beach Crew will help you into the boat, although you should be prepared to get wet. It may be necessary for you to climb into a support boat, which is a fast rib, and transfer to the Argo out in the Bay. The helm will get you sitting comfortably before giving you a sailing experience around the bay. At the end of the sail you will either need to jump out of the Argo onto the beach, or transfer to a support boat.

You should come in comfortable, relaxed clothing, a wetsuit is ideal but if you do not have one a track suit or leggings are fine, wear beach shoes or trainers and bring a wind proof layer even if it is warm on the beach. A hat for the conditions is also useful. You may also wish to bring sun cream and a drink.

The Club will provide and fit a buoyancy aid if you do not have one of your own. Please note you should not wear a self-inflating life jacket.

After the sail you will be able to shower and change in the Club. There will also be an opportunity to meet other members and chat through the Club application process if you would like to. Cadets need to be at least 7 years old and accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

If you have any queries, please contact events@axeyachtclub.co.uk.

We look forward to meeting you and showing you why sailing at Axe is such fun!
