AYC Cadets Race at Portland & Weymouth National Sailing Academy

Published 16:38 on 16 Aug 2016

On Sunday 14th August a group of AYC Cadets went over to Portland & Weymouth Sailing Academy for the 'Sail for Gold' event. The British sailing squad gave us a masterclass. We were allocated three Picos and put into teams of three ensuring everyone got a go! There were four races between sixteen boats sailing around a triangular course. It was difficult in some places because there wasn't much wind especially on the first race but Katie Birt took 1st place!

After the first race the wind increased and changed to the opposite direction, so the instructors decided to change the course. The cadets used their initiative and realised the course had changed long before the other clubs. On the fourth and final race all of the AYC cadets gave it their all and put up a fight. Sam Birt came 2nd followed by the rest of the AYC cadets! Overall we came 3rd out of the six sailing clubs. Everyone was fantastic and they should all be extremely proud of themselves. We set a great example of what the Axe Yacht Club is about. It was also a very good experience for us and we got a good taster of the Portland & Weymouth Sailing Academy.
