Saturday Dinghy Sailing
The 'Cadet & Family Sailing' section of AYC runs a series of Saturday dinghy sailing sessions from April to September to provide fun sailing and skill development opportunities for members of all ages. Most sessions involve bay sailing (subject to weather conditions) although some sessions may use the river or harbour where the tide allows.
Although these sessions are not formal RYA training courses, we aim to help cadets and adults develop their skills in a way that is complementary to the way the RYA teaches. The focus of each session will be tailored around the needs of those who come along. It could be practicing the basics of dinghy sailing, improving boat control, fine-tuning racing skills or a group sail to Beer beach for ice-cream.
So why not come and have a fun sail with family and friends knowing that there is support boat cover available – you can sail your own dinghy or one of the Club training boats (subject to availability).
To give us an idea of how many people to expect, please register online preferably at least 48 hours in advance (all sailing will be weather dependent & may take place on the river if the tide allows):
- Login to the members area
- Click on the calendar tab
- Select the Saturday Sailing session you plan to take part in
- Select 'Keen to Sail' (or 'Available to Support Sailing Session' if you can help onshore with rigging, launch & retrieval etc)
- Click 'Book Now'
Taster sails will be available some weekends for those who would like to try sailing (adults or cadets 7-17years) – email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested. All taster sessions are subject to weather/sea conditions and there being sufficient numbers of experienced sailors available to support.
If you enjoy this taster session you will be encouraged to complete a basic RYA sailing skills course either at AYC (dates for 2018 will be advertised in the early Spring) or a neighbouring centre so that you can then make the most of future Saturday afternoon sailing sessions.
AYC cannot take responsibility for unaccompanied children under 18 years so cadets must be accompanied by a responsible adult, who stays to help either on or off the water. Buoyancy aids in a range of sizes are available to borrow for the session and AYC has a number of training dinghies suitable for cadets & adults. Use of a Club dinghy is subject to availability.
