Cadet Week Programme 2019

627496 1224x

This year's Cadet Week runs from Monday 5 August to Friday 9 August and we have a busy programme of activities planned for on and off the water. We have packed in as many opportunities to sail as possible as well as water and boat based games in the harbour and around the Club and a Big Boat Day. With boat support sessions for parents, sailing for non-sailors and social events some evenings, it will prove to be an exciting and fun week for all.

Our RYA qualified Dinghy Instructors (DIs) and Assistant Instructors (AIs) Austen, Anna, Steve, Oscar, Ben and Tom will be leading the dinghy sailing sessions and they will aim to help the cadets to develop their skills using the RYA methods. We will use all the boats in the Cadet & Families Fleet – Tazs, Topaz Unos, Vibes and Fevas. We hope we will be able to launch the Argo on at least one of the days to offer some sailing experience for non-sailing parents. It will be a busy week!

Whilst we hope to have great summer weather that will mean we can sail from the beach, we have planned to make the most of the tides in the river if the weather is unkind. If we can sail from the beach we will aim to start the day around 09:00 but if we are sailing on the river we will tailor the start times to make best use of the tides. At this stage we would stress that the programme, and especially the timings, are subject to change.

How does it work?

If you've been to Cadet Week before you'll be familiar with how it works. For those new to Cadet Week here are a few notes to be aware of:

Guardians: A parent or an authorised guardian must accompany each cadet to supervise their child and to help on the shore or in the support boat. We will ask each Cadet and Parent to sign both IN and OUT for each session.

Costs: There will be a charge of £10 per cadet per day for the cadet dinghy sailing days to cover the cost of snacks, which will be provided mid-morning, and support boat fuel etc (no charge for the Games or Big Boat Day).

Lunch: If we are blessed with excellent sailing conditions, and the cadets and families want to, we would hope to extend the sailing into the afternoon so you may wish to bring a packed lunch each sailing day.

Facilities: We will be using the AYC facilities this year and it is important that we leave them clean and tidy so there will be a requirement for parents and cadets to participate in a cleaning rota for the changing rooms during the week.

Communications: We will start the day with a daily briefing, and end the day confirming the plan for the next. We would encourage all Cadets and Parents to attend both. We will also have a Cadet Week WhatsApp group for up to date information, programme reminders and updates. We will post the programme and updates on the AYC website so do keep checking there for the latest information.

Support Boat helms and Crew: We will need helms and crew for up to 4 support boats each Cadet dinghy sailing day. Carol will be coordinating the rota so please do volunteer if you are available.

Now it's time to let us know if you are coming…

Here's what we need to know to book your place:

1. The names and ages of the cadets participating and what sailing experience they have

2. What days will they be attending

3. What are the names of the parents/guardians/helpers attending with your cadets

a. How might you be able to help – Support boat helm, crew or general helper

4. The names and mobile phone numbers of anyone who wants to be added to the Cadet Week WhatsApp group.

5. Do you want to join the Cadet Families Pizza Evening – if so how many places.

6. Do you want to join the BBQ and Skittles Evening – if so how many places.

At this stage it is not a commitment to the social events but we would like to have approximate numbers for planning.

Cadet Week last year was extremely popular and enjoyed by all who attended. We hope we will have places for everyone who wants to come this year but if we are over-subscribed we may have to allocate places on a first come first served basis. So don't delay, book your place as soon as possible by sending your information to

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask Carol or Fran.
