Speed Limits & Cautionary Navigation

Members are reminded of the following: Speed limits A maximum speed of 5 knots exists within the harbour and outer approaches. The harbour limits extend 180 metres offshore from the pier head, forming a corridor 160 metres wide. The harbour limits also include the estuary. Additionally, within Seaton Bay an 8 knot speed limit exists immediately off shore from the beach which is marked from April to October with yellow buoys (not in place yet due to COVID19). Between the harbour approaches and the Seaton Bay restricted speed areas, the AYC advises members to observe a 5 knot speed limit, in essence this is the area immediately offshore from the club house (Axmouth Beach), see area diagram. |
Cautionary navigation Vessels navigating close to the beach within the speed restricted areas, should navigate with caution to avoid swimmers and other water users. Vessels navigating within the harbour against the tidal stream have greater manoeuvrability and should give way to those navigating with the stream, especially in the entrance. Due to limited vision on the approach to the entrance from within or seaward, vessels should navigate with cautionand avoid overtaking in the approaches and entrance to the harbour. Vessels should take care to make sufficient allowance when navigating within the harbour, especially during spring tides to avoid being set onto moored craft, pontoons or the bridge. |
